Is it cheaper to ship it yourself?

Two published numbers that had never been put side by side: what USPS charges a walk-in customer for postage alone, and what one 3PL publishes as an all-inclusive average for the same parcel.

For a 4 to 12 ounce parcel, USPS Ground Advantage retail postage runs $7.90 at zone 1 to $12.90 at zone 8. That is postage on its own: no box, no label, no one picking the item off a shelf.

Fulfyld publishes an all-inclusive average of $7.74 per order for the same 4 to 12 ounce band, and that figure already contains postage, pick and pack, packaging and the label.

The bundled average is below retail postage alone at every zone in the band, by $0.16 at the narrowest and $5.16 at the widest.

Top line is USPS retail postage. Second line is that postage minus the $7.74 bundled average, so a positive number means the postage alone already costs more than the whole bundle.

What this does and does not tell you

It answers the self-fulfilment question. If you are shipping from your own kitchen table with no carrier contract, retail is the price you actually pay, and a 3PL's bundled average undercuts it on this band before you count your own labour, your boxes, or your time.

It does not tell you which 3PL is cheaper. A 3PL buys postage on a negotiated commercial contract that is never published, and it sits far below retail. Retail cannot narrow a comparison between two 3PL quotes, and we do not use it that way. Comparing quotes is a different job.

The $7.74 is an average, not a quote. Fulfyld publishes it as "Average Cost $7.74 +" and states these are real averages rather than your quote. We previously repeated it as a rate and logged the correction. It is also the 501 to 1,000 orders a month tier.

And once you ship volume yourself, retail stops being your price too. Commercial and online postage rates are below the counter price, so a growing brand is comparing two discounts rather than a discount against retail.
